The Pomeranian originally came from Pomerania, Germany by breeding from small varieties of the large German Spitz. Its classic Spitz shape and orange coat illustrate its Arctic origins. The Pomeranian, having only recently been bred to reduce its size from a naturally large breed, still acts like a "big dog". It will bark unchecked, making a superb watchdog that will also challenge larger dogs. The breed also makes a superb companion.
